What is the Meaning of Avionics in Aircraft?

With many systems in modern aircraft being electronic, the term avionics has gained popularity, that of which is a combination of the terms aviation and electronics. In aircraft, spacecraft, and even artificial satellites, electronic systems are used for a variety of purposes, ranging from very simple to highly complex functions. Some typical applications include, but are not limited to, flight control systems, engine controls, flight recorders, communications, navigation, threat detection, weather radar, electro-optic (EO/IR) systems, fuel systems, and performance monitors. Altogether, there are seven basic system categories that comprise avionics, those of which we will cover in the following blog.

Navigation and communication are two avionics systems that often go hand-in-hand in aircraft. Together, these systems ensure a pilot knows his location and can discuss his flight with other planes or ground control as necessary. Both are avionics systems that and they make use of radio frequencies to connect and monitor flights. While navigation systems use GPS, such as ground-based radio and a few other programs to determine positions, communication systems work to connect pilots to other crew members via an airband typically between 118 MHz and 136.976 MHz.

Weather systems in aircraft are also a form of avionics, as they electrically monitor precipitation, turbulence, and other various weather conditions. Electronic monitoring systems also include gauges, dials, and other similar instruments that evolved into more computer-based systems instead of the manual models that you can find in older aircraft. In place of older, analog models, avionics work well for monitoring systems in aircraft, as they tend to be more accurate.

A specific application for avionics that is of high importance is the fuel system. This system must be able to calculate the remaining fuel in an aircraft tank in order to maintain efficiency. Finally, avionics are used in collision avoidance, traffic alert, and flight control situations. This includes the modern technology used to detect nearby aircraft and to alert pilots of possible collisions along their course. This even comes with software that provides instructions after seeing potential accidents and ground-proximity warning systems for additional safety. Meanwhile, modern flight control has evolved from prior military applications to preventing pilot error, especially during landing and takeoff in general aircraft. Today, flight control is one of the most critical forms of avionics , and frequent testing is required by the FAA given its significance.

Whether you are operating monoplanes, commercial jets, helicopters, or even unmanned aerial vehicles, avionics are essential to the safe monitoring and operating of flights. No aircraft should have out-of-date avionics, however some may function properly with simple systems. For example, a helicopter might require avionics for searchlights, so the complexity of related avionics is not a high concern. That being said, more complex aircraft will require more sophisticated electronic systems. With all of this in mind, it is important to procure proper electronics and related part types for your avionics systems.
